Ever since it was first created in 2010, the SATOCAO society has aimed to help to boost São Tomé and Principe’s international renown. This small archipelago made up of two islands in the Gulf of Guinea is about 300km from the West African coast.
Since it launched in 2011, SATOCAO has focused on two major areas: rehabilitating plantations and actively supporting the country’s small and mid-sized producers. Its mission is to revive cocoa farming in São Tomé as a way of driving forward development, promoting the local terroir and its inhabitants’ expertise, and boosting the country’s international reputation thanks to its outstanding produce.
Through their partnership, VALRHONA and SATOCAO are committed to developing cocoa production on a “chocolate island”, but also to improving producer communities’ living conditions. In 2022, VALRHONA funded a new drinking water fountain in the Ferreira Governo community to help tackle local people’s difficulties accessing clean water.
São Tomé lives up to its nickname, “chocolate island”. It is teeming with vegetation and water is abundant. The new fountain makes it easier to move water, as it now comes straight to the Ferreira Governo community.
